Fantasy Sandbox is a reimagining of the UC Davis open-source AR Sandbox Toolkit, transforming the original platform into a large-scale, immersive installation designed for embodied play and exploration. While retaining the core depth-sensing and terrain visualization system, the project extends the software through custom visualizations, expanded color maps, and adaptations that support full-body interaction.
The project focused on improving both the aesthetic and experiential qualities of the AR sandbox. The enlarged installation encourages participants to sculpt landscapes with their entire bodies rather than only their hands, creating a more physical and collaborative experience. New color maps and terrain visualizations were developed to enhance both the visual impact of the installation and the legibility of topographic change in real time.
